Message Minute (When Suffering Reveals What We Really Trust)

"Though he slay me, I will hope in him." - Job 13:15

Most of us don't really know what we're trusting in until it gets threatened. You might say "I trust God," but when you lose your job, what's your first emotion? If it's panic, maybe you were actually trusting your paycheck more than you realized.

Suffering has this brutal way of revealing our "functional saviors"—those things we actually depend on for security and meaning. Your health, your relationships, your financial stability, even your children—all good things that become "God-things" when we depend on them too much.

Here's the thing: all functional saviors will eventually disappoint us. Your health will fail. Your retirement might crash. Even good relationships face challenges. But when suffering strips away these false foundations, it forces us to build on the only foundation that can't be shaken—God's love for us in Christ.

Job never got answers to his questions about why he suffered. God never explained His reasons. Instead, God essentially asked, "Do you trust Me?" Job's response? "Though he slay me, I will hope in him." That's not circumstantial faith based on good times—that's foundational faith based on God's character.

The Gospel doesn't promise a pain-free life. Jesus said in this world we will have trouble. But it does promise that our identity as God's beloved children can never be taken away. When you grasp that your worth isn't based on your circumstances but on Christ's unchanging love, suffering can hurt you but it can't ultimately destroy you.

Reflection Question: What functional saviors has suffering revealed in your life? What would it look like to trust God regardless of your circumstances?

Prayer: Lord, show me where I've been trusting in things other than You. Help me build my life on the unshakeable foundation of Your love. Amen.
